Specifying NAB & Bronze Globe Valves for Seawater Handling
When specifying throttling and isolation valves for offshore marine systems, ship building, and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants, material selection is the difference between a 20-year lifespan and catastrophic galvanic failure.
1. The Challenge of Seawater Handling
Seawater is highly corrosive due to its high chloride content. Standard carbon steel (WCB) and even austenitic stainless steels like SS304 and SS316 can suffer from severe pitting and crevice corrosion when exposed to stagnant seawater.
2. Why Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB)?
Nickel Aluminium Bronze (ASTM B148 C95800) is the gold standard for seawater globe valves. The addition of nickel and iron improves strength and provides exceptional resistance to corrosion fatigue, cavitation, and erosion-corrosion. Crucially, NAB resists biofouling (barnacles and algae) because the copper in the alloy acts as a natural biocide.
3. Bronze (Gunmetal) for Utility Lines
For lower pressure utility lines, cooling water, and fire mains, standard Bronze (ASTM B62 C83600) offers an economical but highly effective solution. It provides excellent castability, pressure tightness, and immunity to dezincification.
4. Globe Valve Flow Characteristics
Globe valves are preferred over gate valves in marine cooling systems because they allow for precise flow throttling. A marine engineer can dial in the exact cooling water flow rate to a ship's engine heat exchanger without worrying about the disc vibrating and eroding the seats—a common failure mode when gate valves are used for throttling.
| Material | ASTM Standard | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) | ASTM B148 C95800 | High-velocity seawater, Desalination, Naval vessels |
| Bronze (Gunmetal) | ASTM B62 C83600 | Low-pressure cooling, Fire mains, General marine |
| CF8M (Stainless 316) | ASTM A351 CF8M | Fresh water, mild corrosive environments |
