Forged Valve Ends Cheatsheet (SW / NPT / BW)
Technical reference · Supreme Valves India · Updated 2026-10-28
Direct answer: On Class 800 forged valves, SW = socket weld (ASME B16.11), NPT = tapered pipe thread, BW = butt weld, and SW×NPT means mixed ends. Pick from the isometric — do not assume all Class 800 tags are SW.
| End | Typical use | RFQ phrase |
|---|---|---|
| SW | Permanent small-bore process | SOCKET WELD / SW ENDS |
| NPT | Utility, instrument, removable | FNPT / SCREWED NPT |
| SW×NPT | Manifolds / mixed take-offs | SW x NPT |
| BW | Welded high-integrity branches | BUTT WELD SCH __ |

Frequently asked questions
Is FNPT female thread?
Yes — female NPT ports on the valve. Match male threaded nipple/pipe. BSP is a different thread — do not mix.
Do I need schedule for SW?
Socket depth and pipe schedule must match B16.11 / manufacturer chart. State pipe schedule on the isometric.
Can Class 800 flanged forged valves appear?
Less common than SW/NPT on small bore; if flanged, state class and facing explicitly.
