Y-Strainer Mesh / Micron Selection Chart
Technical reference · Supreme Valves India · Updated 2026-10-28
Direct answer: Pick strainer screen by the particle size you must stop and the pump OEM limit — not by habit. Coarse perforated plate protects against large debris; fine mesh protects control valves and sprays. State mesh or micron on the RFQ.
| Mesh (approx.) | Opening (approx. micron) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 10–20 | ~2000–800 | Coarse debris, cooling water intake |
| 40 | ~400 | General pump suction protection |
| 60–80 | ~250–180 | Finer pump / heat exchanger protection |
| 100 | ~150 | Spray nozzles, tighter cleanliness |
| 200 | ~75 | Fine filtration — watch ΔP |
Openings are approximate; confirm with the screen manufacturer table. Perforated plate is often specified as hole diameter (e.g. 1 mm perf) plus optional mesh liner.

Frequently asked questions
Is 40 mesh always correct for pumps?
No. Follow the pump OEM particle limit and the process cleanliness requirement. 40 mesh is a common starting point for general service, not a universal rule.
Mesh or micron on the PO?
Either is fine if unambiguous. Micron is clearer for fine screens; mesh is common on water utility BOQs.
When is a basket strainer better?
When dirt load is high or you need larger screen area / duplex changeover — see our Y vs basket guide.
