NPT vs BSP Valve Threads — Do Not Mix on Screwed Valves
Screwed valves fail early when NPT and BSP threads are mixed. Pitch, flank angle, and sealing method differ. A “1/2 inch screwed” line item without thread standard is incomplete.
Quick selection
NPT (ASME B1.20.1) — US/project ASME tapered thread; seal on the thread flanks with tape/dope. BSPT — British tapered (ISO 7); similar idea, different form. BSPP — British parallel (ISO 228); usually seals on a gasket/O-ring face, not on the threads alone.
Comparison table
| Factor | NPT | BSPT | BSPP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full name | National Pipe Taper | British Standard Pipe Taper | British Standard Pipe Parallel |
| Form | Taper | Taper | Parallel |
| Typical seal | Thread sealant / tape | Thread sealant | Washer / O-ring on face |
| Common regions | USA, ASME projects | UK, Middle East, mixed plants | Instruments, some ISO plants |
| Interchangeable with NPT? | — | No | No |
| Valve note | State NPT male/female clearly | State BSPT if required | Confirm face seal hardware |
Why cross-threading happens
NPT uses a 60° thread angle; BSP commonly uses 55°. Even when diameters look similar, forcing a joint damages both parts and rarely seals. Always match male and female standards.
RFQ checklist for screwed valves
- Thread standard: NPT, BSPT, or BSPP — mandatory field.
- Male or female ends; union / 3-piece body if maintenance access needed.
- Class (e.g. 800) or PN, MOC (A105, F316, brass/bronze).
- Socket weld alternative if welding is preferred over threaded joints.

For process integrity, many plants prefer SW or BW over screwed joints above certain sizes or in hydrocarbon service. See screwed vs flanged ends and forged Class 800 RFQs.
FAQ
Are NPT and BSP the same?
No. Different thread angle, pitch, and often sealing method. Never assume interchangeability.
Which should I specify for export to the Middle East?
Follow the project piping specification. Many ME plants use ASME (NPT) on US-spec packages and BSP on older British-spec plants. Ask for the thread standard on the RFQ.
Can I convert with an adapter?
Adapters exist but add leak points. Prefer matching the valve thread to the piping class.
Does Class 800 imply NPT?
No. Class 800 forged valves may be NPT, BSPT, or socket weld. State ends explicitly.
