What is a 4/2-Way Hydraulic Directional Solenoid Valve?

A 4/2-way hydraulic directional solenoid valve is a spool valve that controls the direction of hydraulic oil flow in a circuit. The designation "4/2" means the valve has 4 ports and 2 switching positions. The four ports are:

In position 1 (solenoid energised): P connects to A and B connects to T — this extends a double-acting cylinder. In position 2 (spring return, solenoid de-energised): P connects to B and A connects to T — this retracts the cylinder. The solenoid coil provides the electromagnetic force to shift the spool; a return spring restores the default position when the coil is de-energised.

These valves are foundational components in industrial hydraulic circuits: log splitters, injection moulding machines, press brakes, offshore deck cranes, marine winches, and any system requiring reversible cylinder actuation from an electrical signal.

D03 / CETOP 3 / NG6 — Understanding the Mounting Standard

D03, CETOP 3, and NG6 are three names for the same ISO 4401-03 mounting base size. This standard defines the port layout, bolt-hole pattern, and port sizes for interchangeable sub-plate mounting of directional control valves. The D03 base has:

The sub-plate mounting means the valve mounts to a machined manifold block or individual sub-plate, with all plumbing connections made at the manifold/sub-plate level. Valve replacement does not require disconnecting hydraulic lines — the valve simply unbolts from the sub-plate. This is a major maintenance advantage in industrial and offshore applications.

Electrical Specifications — Coil Voltage Selection

Hydraulic solenoid coils are available in a range of voltages. The voltage selection depends on the control panel power supply standard:

VoltageTypical Application
12 VDCMobile hydraulics (tractors, excavators, trucks)
24 VDCIndustrial PLC-controlled systems, most common in India/EU industrial plants
120 VDCOffshore panels, subsea control systems, explosion-proof installations with rectified DC supply
24 VACLegacy North American industrial installations
110/120 VACNorth American standard panel voltage, some Middle East industrial plants

The 120VDC specification is specifically important for offshore and subsea applications: control panels on FPSOs, SPM turret decks, and wellhead platforms often distribute rectified DC at 110–120V to solenoid valves in the Ex-rated zone. Coils certified for 120VDC and rated for Class H insulation (180°C) are required for continuous duty in elevated ambient temperatures on deck or in equipment rooms.

Continuous Duty Coil vs Intermittent — Class H Insulation

Solenoid coils generate heat when energised. If the coil is continuously energised (24/7, valve held in one position), the winding temperature rise determines the insulation class required:

Always specify Class H coils for offshore, tropical, and any continuously-energised application. The marginal cost difference is small compared to the risk of coil failure from thermal degradation.

NEMA Enclosure Ratings for Solenoid Valve Coils

3000 PSI Pressure Rating — Industrial Context

3000 PSI (207 bar) is the standard maximum working pressure for most industrial hydraulic circuits. Log splitters, material handling equipment, agricultural hydraulics, and industrial press circuits typically operate at 150–250 bar (2200–3600 PSI). Offshore hydraulic power units and high-force press circuits may operate at 300–350 bar (4350–5000 PSI), requiring D03 valves with verified 350 bar ratings or upgrade to D05.

Spool Types and Centre Conditions

For 4/2 valves: spring-offset (one solenoid shifts one direction; spring returns to default position) or detented (two solenoids, each locks the spool in position — no spring return). Detented spools retain their position on power loss, which can be desirable or dangerous depending on the application.

Common variant: 4/3 with spring-centred spools — open centre (P and T connected in neutral — pump unloaded), closed centre (all ports blocked — cylinder holds position), or tandem centre (P to T in neutral, A and B blocked — cylinder holds, pump unloaded).

Common Brands and Indian Equivalent Supply

Major brands for D03 hydraulic directional solenoid valves include Parker Hannifin (D1VW series), Bosch Rexroth (4WE6 series), Yuken (DSG series), Continental Hydraulics, and Prince Manufacturing. All produce direct-interchangeable D03 valves with the ISO 4401-03 bolt pattern.

Supreme Valves India supplies Yuken DSG-series equivalents and other ISO 4401-03 compliant directional solenoid valves for industrial and export projects, with coil certification documentation, test certificates, and export packing suitable for Middle East and African project supply.
