WCB Ball vs Gate vs Globe vs Swing Check

ASTM A216 Grade WCB is the cast carbon-steel body grade for non-corrosive steam, water, oil and process lines. The four types below share that material — the choice is function: quarter-turn isolation, rising-stem isolation, throttling, or backflow prevention.

Quick rule: Ball = fast on/off and automation. Gate = full-open isolation, low ΔP. Globe = throttle and regulate. Swing check = prevent reverse flow on pump discharge. Match ASME Class 150 / 300 / 600 to the pipe class — never mix flange ratings.

Typical train on a WCB Class 150 / 300 header

  1. Gate or ball — isolation upstream of equipment
  2. Y-strainer — debris protection (see WCB Y-strainer)
  3. Globe — where flow must be regulated
  4. Swing check — pump discharge / reverse-flow risk

Same ASTM A216 WCB body and RF flanges across the train keeps flange kits and MTC packages consistent. Step Class 150 → 300 → 600 only when the line list requires it.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a WCB ball valve instead of a gate valve?

Use a WCB ball valve for fast quarter-turn on/off isolation, tight shut-off with soft seats, and automation (ISO 5211). Use a WCB gate valve for full-open isolation with minimal pressure drop on steam and process lines where rising-stem OS&Y indication is preferred.

Gate or globe for WCB steam service?

Gate for isolation (full open/close). Globe for throttling, frequent operation and steam stop/regulating duty. Do not throttle on a gate — seat wire-drawing follows.

Where does a WCB swing check belong in the train?

On pump discharge and lines that must prevent reverse flow. Swing checks give low pressure drop on horizontal runs; for slam-sensitive or vertical duty consider dual-plate wafer checks instead.

Are Class 150 and Class 300 WCB valves interchangeable?

No. Flange drilling, face-to-face and pressure–temperature ratings differ. Match the ASME pipe class on the line list and RFQ Class 150, 300 or 600 separately.
