Frequently Asked Questions

What is ISO 15848 for valves?
ISO 15848-1 is the international standard for measuring and classifying fugitive emissions (external stem leakage) from industrial valves. It defines test procedures using methane or helium as test media, and classifies valves into emission classes from A (tightest, ≤10 ppmv) to D (most permissive, >400 ppmv). The test includes mechanical cycling of the valve to simulate operational wear. ISO 15848-2 covers production testing requirements. Specifying ISO 15848-1 ensures valves meet quantified emission performance — not just a general "low emission" claim.
What is live-loaded packing?
Live-loaded packing uses Belleville (disc) springs stacked between the packing gland flange and the packing set. The springs maintain constant compressive force on the packing as it consolidates and wears over time, compensating for packing volume loss that would otherwise create a leak path. This simple retrofit significantly reduces fugitive emissions — typically achieving ISO 15848 Class B or better without exotic packing materials. Live-loaded packing is required by Saudi Aramco (SAES-L-008) for most valve applications.
When should bellow seal valves be specified?
Bellow seal valves should be specified for: (1) ASME B31.3 Category M (lethal) fluid services — H2S, HF, chlorine, phosgene, (2) Carcinogenic substances — benzene, vinyl chloride, ethylene oxide, (3) Radioactive fluid services, (4) Applications where zero stem leakage is mandatory for safety or environmental compliance, and (5) Vacuum service where inward air leakage through packing could contaminate the process. The trade-off is higher initial cost (2-3x a packed valve) and stroke/pressure limitations imposed by the bellows design.
