Fire Safe API 607 vs API 6FA — Which Fire Test to Specify
“Fire-safe” on a datasheet is incomplete without the test standard. API 607 and API 6FA both address soft-seated quarter-turn valves in fire conditions, but project specs name one or the other. Confirm which certificate and valve type the package requires.
Quick selection
API 607 is widely specified for soft-seated quarter-turn valves (especially ball) in process and refining RFQs. API 6FA is the fire test for soft-seated quarter-turn valves historically tied to API 6D / pipeline contexts. State the exact standard, edition, and whether a type-test certificate is required.
Comparison table
| Factor | API 607 | API 6FA |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Fire test for soft-seated quarter-turn valves | Fire test for soft-seated quarter-turn valves (pipeline-associated lineage) |
| Typical RFQ language | “Fire-safe to API 607” on process ball valves | “Fire-safe to API 6FA” on pipeline / API 6D packages |
| Valve types | Ball (common), other soft-seat Q-turn as scoped | Soft-seated Q-turn valves per 6FA scope |
| What it proves | External leakage / operability after fire exposure per procedure | Fire exposure performance per 6FA procedure |
| Not a substitute for | API 6D design, material certs, or API 598 alone | API 6D design compliance by itself |
| Buyer action | Name edition + certificate requirement | Name edition + certificate requirement |
Fire-safe design intent (practical)
- Soft seats may degrade in fire; secondary metal-to-metal seats limit leakage.
- Graphite packing and anti-static features are often paired with fire-safe builds.
- A “fire-safe” label without a test report is not the same as a certified type test.
RFQ wording that works
- “Soft-seated floating/trunnion ball valve, fire-safe tested to API 607 (edition), type-test certificate required.”
- Or: “API 6D trunnion ball, fire-safe to API 6FA, with test certificate.”
- Also state class, bore (FB/RB), ends, MOC, and actuator/gear.

FAQ
Is API 607 the same as API 6FA?
No. Both address fire testing of soft-seated quarter-turn valves, but they are different documents. Specify the one named in the project standard.
Does fire-safe mean metal seated?
Not necessarily. Many fire-safe valves are soft-seated with secondary metal seating after seat burnout. All-metal seats are a different construction.
Do I need both 607 and 6FA?
Only if the project asks for both. Usually one named standard is enough. Ask the end-user piping/valve specialist.
Is API 6D the same as fire-safe?
No. API 6D is a design/pipeline valve standard. Fire testing is additional (6FA/607 as specified).
