What “fire safe” means on a ball valve RFQ
API 607 / API 6FA fire tests burn the valve, then check external leakage and seat leakage after cool-down. A fire-safe design adds a graphite secondary seal so that when the soft seat burns away, metal-to-metal contact still limits leakage.
Always ask for the fire-test certificate number and the size/class range covered — a 2" test does not automatically cover a 12" valve.

Frequently asked questions
Is API 607 the same as API 6FA?
API 607 covers soft-seated quarter-turn valves; API 6FA is the broader fire-test for valves. Many soft-seated ball valves are tested to both.
Do soft seats survive a fire?
Primary PTFE seats do not. The graphite secondary seat provides post-fire sealing within the standard’s leakage limits.
Are all ball valves fire safe?
No. Only designs with secondary metal/graphite seats and a valid fire-test certificate.
Can fire-safe valves be IBR?
Fire-safe is about fire exposure; IBR is Indian boiler code. Both can be specified together when needed.
