What is a Jacketed Valve?

A jacketed valve features a double-wall construction with an outer jacket through which heating (or cooling) medium circulates. This maintains the process fluid at the required temperature throughout the valve body, preventing solidification, crystallization, or viscosity increase. Jacketed valves are critical in industries handling temperature-sensitive media like liquid sulphur (135-150°C), bitumen (150-200°C), polymers, waxes, chocolate, and various chemicals that solidify at ambient temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What heating medium is used in jacketed valves?
Steam is most common (saturated steam at 10 bar provides ~180°C). Hot oil (Therminol, Dowtherm) is used for higher temperatures up to 350°C or when steam is unavailable. Hot water is used for lower-temperature food/pharma applications. The jacket design accommodates any pumpable heating or cooling medium.
Can the jacket cover the bonnet as well as the body?
Yes. We offer three jacket configurations: body-only jacket (standard), body + bonnet jacket (prevents cold spots at the stem area), and full jacket with extension (for the most demanding applications). Body + bonnet jacket is recommended for liquid sulphur and bitumen service where any cold spot can cause solidification.
What is the standard jacket test pressure?
The jacket is hydrostatically tested at 1.5x the jacket design pressure (typically 15 bar for a 10 bar rated jacket). The process side is tested separately per API 598 or BS EN 12266. Both tests are documented in the valve test certificate.
Do you manufacture jacketed valves for sulphur service?
Yes. Sulphur service is one of our core specialties. We manufacture full-jacketed gate, globe, ball, and check valves designed specifically for liquid sulphur at 135-150°C. Features include heated drain plugs, anti-solidification body designs, and companion flanges. Available in carbon steel with steam jacket rated for 10 bar.
