Quick Summary – What is a Gate Valve?

Gate valve = linear motion valve with a flat or wedge-shaped gate that slides up/down to start or stop flow. Turn handwheel → stem lifts gate out of flow path (open) or lowers gate to block flow (closed). Provides minimal pressure drop when fully open. Used for on/off isolation only – NOT for throttling. Types: rising stem (OS&Y), non-rising stem, wedge gate, parallel slide, sluice valve. Materials: WCB, SS316, SS304, alloy steel, duplex. Standards: API 600, API 602, ASME B16.34. Sizes: 1/2" to 48". Pressure: Class 150 to 2500.

How Does a Gate Valve Work?

Handwheel Rotation

Turning the handwheel rotates the stem. In rising stem design, the stem moves upward visually indicating valve position.

Gate Lifts

The stem lifts the wedge gate completely out of the flow path. When fully open, the bore is unobstructed – full bore flow.

Gate Closes

Reverse handwheel rotation lowers the gate. The wedge seats between two angled seat faces, creating a tight metal-to-metal seal.

Sealing

Line pressure pushes the wedge against the downstream seat. Graphite packing around the stem prevents external leakage.
