What is a Basket Strainer?

A basket strainer (also called a bucket strainer or T-type strainer) uses a removable cylindrical basket/bucket inside a vertical housing to filter debris from pipeline fluids. The large basket area provides high dirt-holding capacity, making them ideal for applications with heavy contamination. Duplex basket strainers allow switching between two baskets for uninterrupted flow during cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between simplex and duplex basket strainers?
A simplex basket strainer has one basket — the pipeline must be shut down to clean it. A duplex basket strainer has two baskets with a diverter valve, allowing one basket to be cleaned while the other stays in service. Duplex strainers are essential for continuous-operation applications where shutdown is not acceptable.
What mesh size is standard for basket strainers?
Typical mesh sizes: 20-40 mesh for general industrial use, 60-80 mesh for pump/valve protection, 100-200 mesh for instrument and heat exchanger protection. We can supply perforated baskets (1mm-5mm holes) for coarse straining or woven wire mesh for fine filtration.
Can basket strainers handle high temperatures?
Yes. Our cast steel basket strainers handle temperatures up to 425°C (800°F) in WCB/WCC, and up to 540°C in chrome-moly alloys (WC6/WC9). For cryogenic service down to -196°C, we manufacture in LCB/LCC or stainless steel grades.
Do you manufacture basket strainers per ASME VIII?
Yes. Our fabricated basket strainers are designed and manufactured per ASME Section VIII Division 1 with U-stamp certification. Available with full radiographic examination, PWHT, and third-party inspection by Lloyd's, BV, or TÜV.
