What is a Y Strainer?

A Y strainer is a mechanical device used to filter debris, rust, scale, and other solid particles from pipeline fluids. Named for its Y-shaped body, it houses a cylindrical or conical mesh screen that captures particles while allowing fluid to flow through. Y strainers are installed upstream of pumps, valves, meters, and other sensitive equipment to protect them from damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Y strainer and a basket strainer?
Y strainers have a compact Y-shaped body ideal for high-pressure lines and smaller pipe sizes (up to 8"). They have smaller screen area and are suited for applications with low debris. Basket strainers have a larger vertical basket allowing greater debris capacity — preferred for larger pipe sizes and applications with heavy contamination where frequent cleaning is needed.
What mesh size should I use for a Y strainer?
Standard is 40 mesh (0.42mm openings). For steam service, 20-40 mesh is typical. For instrument protection, 80-100 mesh. For fine filtration, 150-200 mesh. The finer the mesh, the higher the pressure drop — size the strainer to keep pressure loss within acceptable limits.
Can Y strainers be installed vertically?
Y strainers can be installed in horizontal or vertical (flow downward) pipelines. The screen pocket should always point downward for gravity-assisted debris collection. Vertical upward flow is not recommended as debris cannot settle into the screen pocket.
Do you supply IBR approved Y strainers?
Yes. We manufacture IBR certified Y strainers per IS 778 for boiler and steam applications. Supplied with IBR forms (Form III-C), material test certificates, and authorized inspector stamps. Available in cast steel, forged steel, and bronze.
