What is a Safety Relief Valve?

A safety relief valve (SRV) is a pressure-relieving device designed to open automatically when system pressure exceeds a predetermined set pressure, releasing fluid to prevent equipment overpressure. Safety valves are the last line of defense against catastrophic vessel rupture, making them the most critical safety device in any pressurized system. They must operate reliably after years of dormancy — opening at the exact set pressure, relieving at the required capacity, and reseating cleanly without leakage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a safety valve and a relief valve?
A safety valve opens rapidly (pops) to full lift for compressible fluids (steam, gas). A relief valve opens gradually in proportion to overpressure for incompressible fluids (liquids). A safety relief valve can function as either, depending on the application. In practice, "safety relief valve" (SRV) and "pressure relief valve" (PRV) are often used interchangeably.
How often should safety relief valves be tested?
API 510 and most jurisdictions require testing every 5 years for general service, every 3 years for corrosive service, and annually for critical service. IBR-regulated boiler safety valves in India require annual testing. Many facilities are moving to risk-based inspection (RBI) programs that adjust intervals based on service history and criticality.
What is a National Board VR stamp?
The VR (Valve Repair) stamp certifies that safety relief valves have been repaired and tested by an authorized facility per National Board standards. The UV (Valve) stamp certifies new valves manufactured per ASME Section VIII. Both are widely required by insurance companies and regulatory bodies worldwide.
Can you supply IBR approved safety valves for boilers?
Yes. We manufacture IBR certified safety valves per IS 4711 for boiler applications. Supplied with IBR Form III-C, material test certificates, and authorized inspector stamps. Available in cast steel, forged steel, and bronze for boiler drum, superheater, and economizer protection.
