What is API 607?

API 607 (Fire Test for Quarter-Turn Valves) specifies fire testing requirements for soft-seated ball and butterfly valves. A fire-safe valve maintains a secondary metal-to-metal seal after the primary soft seat is destroyed by fire, preventing catastrophic leakage of flammable media.

An API 607 fire safe valve has been type-tested to withstand a controlled fire (minimum 760°C / 1400°F for 30 minutes) while maintaining acceptable leakage rates. After the soft seat melts, a secondary metal-to-metal seal activates to limit leakage below API 607 thresholds.
Is API 607 the same as API 6FA?
No. API 607 is a type test (one sample proves the design), while API 6FA (now withdrawn and replaced by API 607 7th Edition) was a production test. Modern API 607 7th Edition combines and replaces both, with more stringent requirements including low-pressure gas testing.
