Why Duplex 2205 for Valves?

Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205) is a two-phase austenitic-ferritic stainless steel offering roughly twice the yield strength of SS316 with superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Its PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of 34-35 makes it ideal for chloride-bearing environments where SS316 fails. The high strength allows thinner wall sections, reducing weight by up to 30% compared to equivalent SS316 designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507?
Duplex 2205 (PREN ~35) is the workhorse grade for moderate chloride environments. Super Duplex 2507 (PREN ~42) has higher Mo and N content, offering superior pitting resistance for aggressive environments like hot seawater, concentrated brines, and acidic chloride solutions. 2507 costs ~30% more than 2205.
Can Duplex 2205 valves be used for sour service?
Yes. Duplex 2205 is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for sour service with specific limitations on hardness (≤28 HRC) and environmental conditions. Solution-annealed and water-quenched condition with ferrite content 35-65% is required. We supply with full NACE compliance documentation.
What is the maximum service temperature for Duplex 2205?
The recommended maximum continuous service temperature is 250°C (480°F). Above this, prolonged exposure can cause 475°C embrittlement due to sigma/chi phase precipitation. For higher temperatures, consider austenitic grades (SS316, SS321) or nickel alloys.
Do you test for detrimental intermetallic phases?
Yes. All our Duplex 2205 valves are tested per ASTM A923 (Methods A, B, and C) to verify absence of detrimental intermetallic phases (sigma, chi). Ferrite content is verified by ferritoscope (35-65% per NORSOK M-630). Impact testing at -46°C is standard.
