A motor operated ball valve (MOV) combines a trunnion-mounted ball valve with an electric quarter-turn actuator to provide remote-controlled, automated pipeline isolation. Unlike a floating ball valve, the trunnion-mounted design transfers pipeline thrust loads to the valve body through the trunnion bearings rather than the seats, allowing full-bore isolation at high differential pressures and large bore sizes up to 48 inch. The electric actuator provides open/close control via 4–20mA, HART, or fieldbus (PROFIBUS/Foundation Fieldbus) signals from a DCS or ESD system, with local manual override and position feedback. How is the electric actuator sized for a large-bore MOV ball valve?

The actuator output torque requirement is calculated from the valve's break-open torque (BTO) and running torque at maximum differential pressure across the seat, applying a safety factor of 1.25–1.5 per ISA 75.19 guidance. For large bore valves (24 inch and above), multi-turn or quarter-turn electric actuators from Rotork, Auma, or equivalent are selected, with the valve manufacturer confirming the ISO 5211 mounting pad and shaft size. We provide actuator sizing calculations with every MOV supply.

What fail-safe modes are available for an electric actuated ball valve?

Electric actuators offer fail-in-last-position (most common), fail-open, or fail-closed modes. Fail-open and fail-close are achieved using spring-return actuators or battery/capacitor backup power packs that drive the valve to the designated safe position on loss of supply. For pipeline ESD duty, battery backup or spring-return electric actuators are specified to ensure valve closure on power failure.
