API 600 gate valves in ASTM A216 WCB remain the default isolation choice on carbon-steel steam headers, boiler associated piping, and many process water and oil lines. This guide covers selection criteria, standards, wedge and bonnet options, steam-specific failure modes, and the RFQ data that keeps quotations accurate.

Role of the gate valve on steam lines

Gate valves provide full-bore isolation with low pressure drop when fully open. The wedge lifts clear of the flow path, so permanent pressure loss is minimal compared with globe valves. They are not throttling valves. Partial opening concentrates velocity across the seating faces and causes wire drawing, seat scoring, and eventual passing. For regulated flow, specify a WCB globe valve instead of forcing a gate into control duty.

For steam headers and boiler associated piping in carbon steel, ASTM A216 WCB API 600 gate valves are the common specification. Body material selection is covered in detail in the ASTM A216 WCB material guide.

Selection criteria

Screen class with the valve pressure class selector. For torque and actuator sizing on motorised gates, use the calculators hub.

Standards: API 600, ASME B16.34, API 598

API 600 defines design, materials, and wall thickness for steel gate valves in the sizes and ratings used on refinery and process plants. Face-to-face dimensions follow ASME B16.10. Pressure–temperature ratings follow ASME B16.34. Factory shell and seat tests typically follow API 598. Project specifications may add NDE of castings, PMI of trim, and third-party witness of hydro tests.

Do not confuse API 600 (cast/forged steel gate valves) with API 602 (compact forged gate, globe, and check valves for small sizes). Stating the wrong standard on a small NPS item delays technical clarification.

OS&Y and wedge options

Outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) shows stem position and keeps the stem threads outside the fluid. That matters on steam: threads stay cleaner and lubrication is accessible. Inside-screw designs hide position and expose threads to media — rarely preferred on steam isolation.

Flexible wedges tolerate thermal distortion better than solid wedges on cycling steam lines. Solid wedges are simple and robust on smaller sizes with stable temperatures. Split wedges and parallel-slide designs appear on specific project specs; follow the piping class, do not improvise.

Bonnet and stem designs

Bolted bonnet gates dominate Class 150–600. Pressure-seal bonnets appear on high-pressure high-temperature steam where bolting load at the bonnet joint becomes impractical. Rising stem OS&Y is preferred for visible position. Non-rising stems save height in buried or tight pits but hide position unless an indicator is fitted. Back seats allow packing replacement in some designs when the valve is fully open — confirm whether the project permits packing work under pressure before relying on this feature.

Trim selection for steam

13Cr trim is common on WCB steam gates. Stellite or equivalent hardfacing resists wire drawing on high-velocity seats. Stainless stems help where packing corrosion is a concern. Match trim to steam condition — wet steam erodes faster than dry saturated steam. Superheated steam at elevated temperature requires checking both body P–T rating and trim hardness. For wet steam upstream of turbines or process equipment, consider a moisture separator in the line layout.

IBR on Indian boilers

Many Indian boiler projects require IBR documentation for steam valves on registered boilers and defined steam circuits. Incomplete form lists and missing heat-traceability cause inspection delays more often than metallurgy disputes. Use the IBR valve checklist and see IBR valves. For the documentation-focused walkthrough, read IBR approved valves for Indian boiler circuits; for steam metallurgy and valve-type selection under IBR scope, see IBR certified valves for Indian boiler circuits.

Installation notes

Install gates fully open or fully closed in service. Use a bypass globe for warm-up on large steam gates to reduce thermal shock across the wedge. Support heavy actuators so stem alignment is not distorted. Torque values for flange bolting should follow project flange procedures. Orient the stem where packing leaks are visible and accessible. On horizontal steam lines, follow the manufacturer orientation notes for the yoke and packing gland.

Failure modes

Pair isolation gates with WCB swing checks or other NRV types on pump discharge. Quarter-turn isolation on non-steam utilities may use a WCB ball valve where the piping class allows it.

FAQ

Can gate valves throttle steam?

No — use a globe valve for throttling to avoid seat damage.

Class selection?

Use ASME B16.34 charts; the pressure class selector gives a starting point for enquiries.

When is IBR documentation required?

For valves on registered Indian boilers and certain steam lines under IBR scope. Confirm with the boiler inspector and use the IBR valve checklist.

Solid wedge or flexible wedge for steam?

Flexible wedges generally tolerate thermal distortion better on cycling steam lines. Solid wedges remain common on smaller sizes and stable temperature duties.
