ASTM A216 WCB: Complete Valve Body Material Guide
Technical guide · Supreme Valves India · Updated 2026-09-19
ASTM A216 Grade WCB is the dominant cast carbon-steel specification for industrial valve bodies on steam, water, oil, and non-corrosive process lines. This guide explains what WCB is, how it is selected against pressure–temperature charts, where it fails, and how to write an unambiguous RFQ. Supreme Valves India manufactures and supplies WCB valves with EN 10204 3.1 traceability from Ahmedabad.

What ASTM A216 WCB is
ASTM A216 covers carbon-steel castings for valves, flanges, fittings, and other pressure-containing parts suitable for fusion welding and for service at high temperature. Grade WCB is the workhorse grade in that specification. In procurement language, “WCB valve” almost always means a cast carbon-steel body (and usually bonnet) to A216 WCB, with trim selected separately for the media.
WCB is chosen when the connecting pipe is carbon steel and the fluid does not demand stainless or alloy corrosion resistance. It is weldable with standard carbon-steel procedures when chemistry and carbon equivalent are controlled. It is not a substitute for CF8/CF8M on chloride, acid, or seawater service.
Selection criteria
- Media compatibility — Steam, condensate, fresh water, oils, air, nitrogen, and many hydrocarbons are typical. Corrosive chemicals need stainless or lined valves.
- Design temperature — Always check ASME B16.34 ratings for the WCB material group at design T. Carbon steel allowable pressure falls as temperature rises.
- Design pressure / class — Class 150, 300, and 600 cover most utility and process isolation. Screen with the pressure class selector, then confirm against the piping class.
- Valve type for duty — Isolation gate or ball; throttling globe; non-return check. See type-specific guides linked below.
- Trim and bolting — Body WCB does not define seat hardness or stem grade. State trim explicitly.
- Low-temperature service — Standard WCB is not a cryogenic grade. Impact-tested or low-temperature carbon steels are specified separately when required.
- IBR steam in India — Flag documentation when the boiler circuit requires it: IBR valves, IBR checklist.
Standards that govern WCB valves
Material: ASTM A216 Grade WCB. Pressure–temperature ratings and wall thickness philosophy: ASME B16.34. Product design standards depend on type:
- Gate — API 600 (steam isolation guide, product)
- Ball — API 608 (selection guide, product)
- Globe — WCB globe valve
- Swing check / NRV — WCB swing check, NRV hub, types guide
- Testing — API 598 or EN 12266; MTCs EN 10204 3.1
Flanged ends: ASME B16.5. Face-to-face: ASME B16.10. Butt-weld: ASME B16.25. Do not mix Class 150 flanges onto Class 300 piping.
Chemistry and mechanical intent (engineering view)
A216 WCB chemistry limits carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, and residual elements so the casting is weldable and has predictable strength. Mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation) are verified on representative specimens per the casting specification and heat. Buyers should request heat numbers on nameplates and certificates — not only a generic “WCB” stamp. PMI of the body is sometimes added on critical hydrocarbon projects to confirm carbon-steel versus stainless mix-ups in the warehouse.
Applications where WCB is the default
- Utility steam and condensate on carbon-steel headers
- Cooling water and firewater (check corrosion allowance and coating; seawater is different)
- Oil and non-corrosive process isolation
- Compressed air and inert gas
- Boiler associated piping in WCB temperature range, with IBR docs when required — see IBR metallurgy guide and IBR documentation guide
Wet steam systems may still use WCB bodies while needing a moisture separator to protect seats and downstream equipment.
When not to use WCB
- Seawater, brine, and high-chloride services without special protection
- Strong acids and many chemical processes (use stainless, alloy, or lined)
- Stainless piping systems where galvanic and cleanliness rules forbid carbon steel
- Temperatures above the ASME B16.34 envelope for the WCB group
- Cryogenic or low-temperature impact-critical service without the correct LTCS grade
Failure modes related to material choice
- General corrosion — Wrong media for carbon steel; wall thinning and packing leak paths.
- Corrosion under insulation (CUI) — Outdoor insulated steam lines with wet insulation.
- Erosion–corrosion — High-velocity wet steam or flashing condensate on seats and fittings.
- Thermal fatigue / distortion — Large temperature cycles on heavy castings; correct warm-up procedures matter on large gates.
- Casting defects — Porosity or inclusions revealed at hydro; NDE of castings reduces risk on critical tags.
- Bolting mismatch — Body is WCB but bolting grade is wrong for temperature, causing joint relaxation or brittle failure.

FAQ
What does WCB stand for?
WCB is a grade designation in ASTM A216 for cast carbon steel suitable for fusion welding. It is the most common cast carbon-steel grade for valve bodies in process and utility service.
WCB vs CF8M?
WCB is cast carbon steel for non-corrosive services matching carbon-steel pipe. CF8M is cast 316 stainless for corrosive or stainless piping systems.
What is the typical temperature limit for WCB valves?
Use ASME B16.34 pressure–temperature charts for the WCB material group at the design temperature. Do not rely on ambient Class ratings alone. Soft seats on ball valves may limit temperature before the body does.
Is WCB acceptable for IBR steam valves?
Often yes within the P–T envelope and piping class, provided IBR documentation is completed. Confirm scope with the boiler inspector.

What ASTM A216 Grade WCB means on a valve body
ASTM A216 Grade WCB is the most common cast carbon steel grade for industrial valve bodies in process plants, utilities and steam systems. WCB is a weldable cast carbon steel used for gate, globe, ball, check and strainer bodies when the fluid is not aggressively corrosive and the temperature stays within the limits published for the grade in ASME B16.34.
Procurement teams often write “CS WCB” or “A216 WCB” on datasheets. That string alone is not a complete valve specification — you still need size, pressure class, design standard (API 600, API 608, BS 1873, BS 1868), end connection, trim, seat type and testing.
Chemistry and mechanical intent (buyer view)
WCB is chosen for strength, weldability and cost relative to stainless castings. Typical service includes water, steam, oil, air and many hydrocarbons. It is not the default for seawater, strong acids or chloride-rich condensates — those move to bronze, duplex or high-alloy bodies. For a material comparison see WCB vs SS316 and WCB vs WCC vs LCB.

Pressure class and temperature
Class 150–600 covers most utility and process lines for WCB. Higher classes need confirmation of wall thickness, flange facing and trim temperature limits. Use the ASME pressure class selector before locking the datasheet. Soft seats (PTFE/RPTFE) have lower temperature ceilings than metal seats even when the WCB body is still within its rating.
Trim pairing with WCB bodies
Common trim is 13Cr or stainless (CF8/CF8M seats and discs) for general service. Hard-faced seats are used on steam and flashing condensate. Ball valves often use CF8/CF8M ball with RPTFE seats for Class 150–300 utility service. Always state trim separately from body MOC on the RFQ.
Documentation buyers should request
- Material test certificate EN 10204 3.1 for body and bonnet castings
- Hydrostatic and seat test to API 598 (or project equivalent)
- GA drawing and face-to-face reference (ASME B16.10 where applicable)
- IBR documentation when the valve sits on a registered boiler circuit in India — start with the IBR enquiry checklist
Common specification errors
- Writing only “WCB valve” without type (ball vs gate vs globe)
- Mixing Class 150 flanges with Class 300 design pressure
- Assuming WCB is acceptable for seawater firewater without alloy review
- Leaving seat material blank on steam RFQs
