What is a Y-type strainer and how does it work?
A Y-type strainer is a plumbing device used to remove suspended solids from liquid, steam, or gas pipelines. It gets its name from its Y-shaped body. Fluid enters the strainer body and passes through a perforated or mesh screen that captures particulates like rust, scale, and sand. The captured debris can be cleaned by removing the blow-off cap or cover, making Y-strainers ideal for protecting downstream equipment such as pumps, meters, and regulators.
What pressure rating is available for cast iron Y-strainers?
Our cast iron Y-strainers are available in PN16 (16 bar / 232 PSI) rating for sizes 1/2" to 24". For higher pressure requirements, PN25 and Class 150# ratings are also available. The PN16 rating is suitable for water, mild steam, and general industrial applications at temperatures up to approximately 220°C depending on the service medium.
What screen perforation options are available?
Standard screen perforation ranges from 0.5mm to 3.0mm depending on the pipe size and application. For water and wastewater: 1.0mm to 2.0mm; for steam: 0.5mm to 1.0mm; for oil and fuel: 0.8mm to 1.5mm. Mesh-lined screens (40 mesh to 100 mesh) are available for finer filtration. Screen material is typically SS304 for general service and SS316L for corrosive or offshore environments.
Can Y-strainers be installed in both horizontal and vertical orientations?
Yes. Y-strainers can be installed in horizontal or vertical orientations, but the strainer basket must always be facing downward in the direction of flow to ensure proper debris collection and drainage. Installing the strainer upside down will prevent collected debris from settling properly and may cause damage to the screen. For vertical upward flow applications, consult with our engineering team.
Are cast iron Y-strainers IBR approved for India?
Yes, our cast iron Y-strainers are IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations) compliant and certified for use in boiler feedwater and steam pipeline connections in India. IBR approval is mandatory for valves and fittings used in steam boilers in India. Our IBR-certified strainers carry the required documentation and stamps for regulatory compliance.
