Frequently Asked Questions

What mesh size for steam strainer vs water strainer?

Steam strainers use: 30-mesh (588 micron) for main steam lines to prevent scale and pipe rust from entering traps and meters; 60-mesh (250 micron) for instrument air and control steam where finer protection is needed. The larger mesh for steam accounts for larger particle sizes expected and higher velocities. Water strainers use: 40-mesh (400 micron) for general service, 60-mesh (250 micron) for cooling water and process water, 80-mesh (180 micron) for fine filtration of metering and pump suction. For Saudi Arabian seawater cooling, 40-mesh is standard for pump protection; for instrument air, 60-mesh prevents nozzle blocking. Mesh selection must also consider pressure drop - finer mesh increases differential pressure.

Y-strainer vs basket strainer - which for duplex filtration?

Y-strainers have a screening element shaped like a Y, suitable for horizontal or vertical pipelines with limited space. They handle lower flow rates and smaller pipe sizes (to 14 inches typically). Basket strainers have a large basket element in a pot-style body, providing 3-5x more screen area than Y-strainers. For duplex (two basket) strainers with diverter valve, they allow online cleaning - one basket in service while other is cleaned. For Saudi Arabian water treatment: Y-strainer for instrument lines and small flows; duplex basket strainer for pump suction and large flows where online maintenance is required. Basket strainers also handle viscous fluids better due to larger screen area.

How to select strainer for protecting pump suction?

Pump suction strainer selection: (1) Open area ratio (screen area / pipe area) should be minimum 3:1 to minimize pressure drop - typically 4:1 for good practice, (2) Free strainer area (mesh open area) = mesh percent x open area ratio, (3) Select mesh based on pump tolerance: 40-mesh for general water pumps (0.5mm tolerance), 80-mesh for ANSI/Hydraulic Institute standards pump, (4) For Saudi Arabian seawater pumps (Samsung, KSB), specify minimum 40-mesh with 4:1 open area ratio. Basket strainers are preferred over Y-strainers for pump suction due to larger capacity. Provide differential pressure gauge to signal when cleaning is needed - typically 10-15 PSI differential.

What is blow-down valve connection for strainer?

Blow-down (blow-off) connection is a threaded outlet at the strainer low point for draining debris and flushing fluid during maintenance. Standard blow-down sizes: 1/2 inch NPT for strainers to 2 inch, 3/4 inch for 2-4 inch strainers, 1 inch for larger. For Saudi Arabian steam service, blow-down is essential for removing scale and rust. The blow-down valve (typically a ball valve or needle valve) should be full port to allow complete draining. In Riyadh district heating, blow-down is routed to a flash tank for steam recovery. Never install a strainer without blow-down capability in steam or dirty water service.

Cast iron vs stainless steel strainer material selection?

Cast iron (ASTM A126 Class B) strainers are economical for: (1) water and low-pressure steam service below 230°C, (2) budget applications where corrosion allowance is acceptable, (3) buried service with external coating. Not suitable for: corrosive fluids, high-pressure steam above Class 300, or where rust contamination is unacceptable. Stainless steel (SS316/CF8M) strainers are required for: (1) chemical and process lines, (2) seawater and offshore platforms (Saudi Aramco NADCP requirement), (3) food and pharmaceutical (3-A sanitary), (4) high-pressure steam service, (5) where zero corrosion contamination is critical. For Jeddah RO desalination, SS316 strainers with 3.1 MTC are mandatory per SWCC specifications.
