Valve Troubleshooting Guide
Select your valve problem below to diagnose the issue and get expert recommendations for repair. This guide covers leakage, vibration, actuator failure, noise, and more.
Tip: Troubleshooting approach varies by valve type. This guide covers Ball, Gate, Globe, Butterfly, and Check valves. For specific actuator issues, see the Pneumatic or Electric Actuator sections.
Select Your Problem
Leakage (Seat/Body)
Valve drips or flows when closed. External leakage visible.
Stem Leakage
Fluid escaping around the stem or bonnet area.
Actuator Won't Move
Pneumatic or electric actuator not functioning.
Valve Vibration
Abnormal vibration or shaking during operation.
Excessive Noise
Loud noises from valve - cavitation, aerodynamic.
Hard to Operate
Valve requires excessive force to open/close.
Rapid Wear/Erosion
Valve failing faster than expected.
Water Hammer
Thumping or banging sounds in piping.

Common Valve Problems Reference
Ball Valve Common Issues
- Leakage past closed position: Debris on seats, worn PTFE seats, insufficient actuator torque, incorrect seat material for temperature
- Stem leakage: Damaged or worn stem packing, incorrect packing installation, damaged stem surface
- Excessive torque: Seized stem bearing, damaged gear operator, actuator not sized correctly
Gate/Globe Valve Common Issues
- Bonnet leakage: Damaged bonnet gasket, loose bonnet bolts, corrosion between bonnet and body
- Valve won't close fully: Worn seat faces, debris in seating area, damaged stem or wedge
- Stem seizure: Packing too tight, stem corrosion, lack of lubrication
Butterfly Valve Common Issues
- Leakage past disc: Damaged seat, incorrect actuator torque setting, worn or deformed seat
- Disc interference: Incorrect pipe alignment, misaligned disc at assembly, thermal expansion
- High torque: Damaged or corroded seat, actuator not sized correctly, debris on seat
Check Valve Common Issues
- Check valve hammering: Too fast closing, missing or weak springs, incorrect installation orientation
- Valve won't reseat: Worn or damaged check disc/seat, spring failure, debris trapped
- Excessive wear: High velocity service, frequent cycling, abrasive media
