Materials by Application

WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo)

For service temperatures up to 538°C. The standard chrome-moly grade for moderate high-temperature applications in refineries and power plants.

  • Steam headers 400-538°C
  • Catalytic cracker
  • Hot oil service
  • Boiler blowdown

WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo)

Higher chromium and molybdenum for improved creep resistance up to 593°C. Widely specified for main steam and hot reheat lines in power generation.

  • Main steam lines
  • Hot reheat steam
  • Hydrogen service
  • FCC reactor circuits

C5 / C12 (5Cr / 9Cr-1Mo)

Superior resistance to sulfidation, oxidation, and naphthenic acid corrosion at elevated temperatures. Essential for sulfur-bearing hot hydrocarbon service.

  • Crude distillation units
  • Vacuum distillation
  • Coker units
  • Hydroprocessing reactors

Industry Applications

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I specify WC6 vs WC9 valve body material?
WC6 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo) is suitable for service temperatures up to 538°C and is cost-effective for general high-temperature applications. WC9 (2.25Cr-1Mo) is required when service temperature exceeds 538°C or when superior creep resistance and hydrogen resistance are needed (e.g., main steam lines, hydrogen service in refineries). WC9 has higher allowable stress at elevated temperatures per ASME B16.34.
Why are Stellite-faced seats required for high-temperature valves?
At elevated temperatures, standard 13% chromium (SS410) seats soften and are susceptible to galling, erosion, and steam cutting. Stellite #6 (cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy) maintains hardness above 38 HRC at 600°C, resists galling between mating surfaces, and provides excellent erosion and cavitation resistance. It is the standard trim overlay for all critical high-temperature valve applications.
What is a pressure-seal bonnet and when is it needed?
A pressure-seal bonnet uses an internal pressure-energized seal ring instead of external bolting to seal the body-bonnet joint. As internal pressure increases, the seal ring is compressed tighter, improving the seal. Pressure-seal construction is typically specified for Class 600 and above, especially at high temperatures where bolted bonnet gaskets may creep and relax over time, leading to leakage.
Do high-temperature valves require PWHT?
Yes. Chrome-moly steel valves (WC6, WC9, C5, C12) require Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of all pressure-boundary welds per ASME B31.1 / B31.3 and ASME Section VIII. PWHT relieves residual stresses, tempers the heat-affected zone, and restores creep resistance. Typical PWHT for WC9 is 690-730°C for a minimum of 1 hour per 25mm thickness.
Can you supply chrome-moly valves for Saudi Arabia power projects?
Yes. We regularly supply WC6 and WC9 valves for power generation projects in Saudi Arabia, including SEC (Saudi Electricity Company) specifications. Our high-temperature valves are supplied with full PWHT records, hardness testing per NACE MR0103, PMI verification, and EN 10204 3.1 material certificates. SABER certification is included for all Saudi exports.
