What is a 3-piece ball valve?
A 3-piece ball valve has a centre body (holding the ball, seats and stem) clamped between two end caps by body bolts. Because the end caps carry the pipe connection, the centre section can be unbolted and swung out of the line to replace seats and seals without cutting the pipe or disturbing the end connections. This makes 3-piece valves the standard choice for socket weld and butt weld lines that need periodic maintenance.
Compared with a 1-piece or 2-piece valve, a 3-piece valve costs more but is easier to service, is usually full port, and is available with an ISO 5211 mounting pad for direct actuator mounting.

Welding a 3-piece ball valve into the line
- Remove the centre body, ball and seats before welding the end caps, or loosen the body bolts and keep the seats away from the heat.
- For butt weld ends, specify extended (nipple) ends if the valve must be welded in place without dismantling; this keeps the seats away from the heat-affected zone.
- Re-assemble with new body gaskets if specified and torque the body bolts evenly before pressure testing.
- For automated valves, order the ISO 5211 pad and stem size to match the actuator so the bracket and coupling are not needed.

What is the advantage of a 3-piece ball valve?
The centre body can be removed from the line for seat and seal replacement without cutting the pipe or disturbing the end connections. This is especially useful on socket weld and butt weld lines.
What does 1000 WOG mean on a ball valve?
WOG means water, oil, gas. A 1000 WOG valve is rated 1000 psi (about 69 bar) at ambient temperature for non-shock cold service. The rating is lower at elevated temperature and depends on the seat material.
Can a 3-piece ball valve be welded in place?
Yes. Either remove the centre body and seats before welding, or specify extended butt weld ends so the seats stay clear of the weld heat.
What is the difference between a 2-piece and a 3-piece ball valve?
A 2-piece valve has a body and one end piece, and must be removed from the line for repair. A 3-piece valve has a separate centre body that swings out while the end caps stay welded or screwed in the line.
Which seat material should I choose?
PTFE for general service up to about 150°C, glass-filled RPTFE for higher pressure and temperature, PEEK for hotter service, and metal seats for abrasive or high-temperature service.
