Selecting Actuators & Limit Switches for WCB Gate & Globe Valves
When specifying ASTM A216 WCB Cast Steel Valves for industrial pipelines, engineers frequently need to integrate them into automated control systems (DCS/PLC). This requires factory-mounting specific Actuators and Limit Switch Boxes.
Automating WCB Gate Valves
Gate valves are primarily on/off isolation valves. Because of the high torque required to unseat the wedge, automating a Class 150 WCB Gate Valve requires powerful linear thrust.
- Electric Actuators: Ideal for remote pipelines where instrument air is unavailable. They provide high torque but slower operation times.
- Pneumatic Cylinders: Double-acting linear pneumatic cylinders provide rapid closing times and high thrust, essential for emergency shutdown (ESD) applications.
Automating WCB Globe Valves
Unlike gate valves, globe valves are frequently used for throttling and modulating flow.
For modulating control, a WCB Globe valve is typically paired with a pneumatic diaphragm actuator and an electro-pneumatic positioner (4-20mA). This allows for extremely precise flow regulation.
Limit Switch Box Selection Criteria
Limit switches sit atop the actuator and send a signal back to the control room indicating whether the valve is fully open or fully closed.
| Environment Type | Required Enclosure Standard | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|
| General Purpose / Water | Weatherproof (IP67 / NEMA 4X) | Cooling water, standard steam |
| Hazardous / Explosive | Flameproof (Ex d) / ATEX Zone 1 | Refineries, Natural Gas |
| Highly Corrosive / Offshore | Intrinsically Safe (Ex ia) SS316 | Marine, Offshore Platforms |
