Pressure Safety Valves & Fire Pump Discharge Valves for Offshore Projects

Updated: June 2026 | Supreme Valves India Technical Team

Offshore platform packages bundle together a wide range of safety-critical valves — from pressure relief on process and utility systems, to the discharge isolation and check valves on fire and general service (GS) pump systems. EPC contractors building these packages often need a single supplier who can handle both the relief valve scope and the conventional gate/check valve scope, with documentation aligned to major operator specifications.

This guide covers two recurring scopes from recent offshore project enquiries: pressure safety valves in nitrogen gas service, and fire & GS pump discharge valves.

1. Pressure Safety Valves (PSVs) for Nitrogen Gas Service

Nitrogen blanketing and purge systems on offshore platforms protect tanks and process vessels from over-pressure and oxygen ingress. The PSVs protecting these systems must be sized for the specific relief scenario — typically blocked outlet, fire case, or control valve failure — and selected per API 526 (standard orifice sizes and flanged dimensions) and API 520 (sizing and selection methodology).

Information Needed to Quote a PSV:

  • Set pressure and relieving pressure (with accumulation %)
  • Relieving fluid (nitrogen), temperature, and required relief capacity
  • Inlet/outlet size and rating (e.g., 1" x 2", Class 300/600)
  • Body and trim materials (commonly carbon steel body with stainless trim for nitrogen service)
  • Certification requirements (CE/PED, API 526 nameplate data)

2. Fire & General Service (GS) Pump Discharge Valves

The discharge line of a fire water or general service pump on an offshore platform typically includes an isolation gate valve and a swing or dual-plate check valve, sized to the pump's rated discharge pressure and flow. For seawater-fed fire pumps, materials are selected for long-term immersion and corrosion resistance — carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB) for utility GS systems, or duplex/super duplex stainless and NAB for direct seawater contact.

Where the package specification calls for fire-safe design, gate and check valves should be tested and certified to API 607 (fire test for soft-seated quarter-turn valves) or the equivalent standard for the valve type, in addition to standard API 598 hydrostatic and seat testing.

3. Documentation for Major Operator Specifications

Offshore packages associated with operators such as ADNOC, ARAMCO, and international majors like Shell typically require a vendor documentation package including EN 10204 Type 3.1 Material Test Certificates, hydrostatic and seat leakage test reports per API 598, PSV certification per API 526/520, and coordination with third-party inspection agencies (Bureau Veritas, TUV, Lloyds, DNV) as nominated in the project MR (Material Requisition).
