Direct answer · August 2026
When should you choose SS304 instead of SS316 for a valve?
Choose SS304 (CF8) for general corrosive water, food-grade, and low-chloride service at lower cost. Choose SS316 (CF8M) when chlorides, acids, caustics, or offshore/marine exposure require molybdenum-enhanced corrosion resistance. Both are available as gate, globe, check, ball, and butterfly valves from Supreme Valves India.

| Factor | SS304 / CF8 | SS316 / CF8M |
|---|---|---|
| Molybdenum | No | Yes — better chloride pitting resistance |
| Typical use | Water, food, mild corrosive | Chemical, pharma, offshore, chlorides |
| Relative cost | Lower | Typically 10–20% higher than SS304 |
| Temperature | −196°C to ~400°C | −196°C to ~400°C |
Frequently asked questions
Is CF8M the same as SS316?
Yes. CF8M is the cast equivalent of wrought AISI 316 stainless steel.
Is SS316 always required for seawater?
SS316 improves chloride resistance vs SS304; severe seawater may specify duplex, NAB, or super duplex per project spec.
Can SS304 and SS316 valves mix on one PO?
Yes. Many projects specify SS304 for water lines and SS316 for chemical lines on a single supplier PO.
