Floating vs trunnion: when to specify trunnion
On a floating ball valve the ball is pushed onto the downstream seat by line pressure. On a trunnion mounted valve the ball is fixed on upper and lower trunnions; seats are spring-loaded onto the ball. That cuts operating torque, allows upstream sealing (DBB), and handles higher ΔP on larger sizes.
Rule of thumb on RFQs: floating up to NPS 4 Class 150/300; trunnion for NPS 6+ or Class 600+ pipeline and ESD service.
