Frequently Asked Questions

Pneumatic or electric actuator — which should I choose?
Pneumatic actuators are preferred when: instrument air is available, fast open/close is needed (< 2 seconds for small valves), fail-safe spring return is required, and the environment is hazardous (no risk of ignition). Electric actuators are preferred when: no air supply is available (remote locations), precise modulating control is needed, higher torque is required for large valves, and intelligent diagnostics/bus communication is desired. For most oil & gas and process plants, pneumatic is the default choice.
What is ISO 5211 and why is it important?
ISO 5211 is the international standard for valve-actuator mounting interfaces. It defines standardized flange dimensions (F03 to F25) and drive couplings that allow any ISO 5211-compliant actuator to be mounted on any ISO 5211-compliant valve without custom brackets. This ensures interchangeability, reduces lead times, and simplifies spares inventory. All our actuated valve packages comply with ISO 5211.
What is SIL rating for actuated valves?
SIL (Safety Integrity Level) is a measure of the reliability of a safety function, defined by IEC 61508/61511. SIL 2 means the probability of failure on demand (PFD) is between 0.01 and 0.001. SIL 3 means PFD between 0.001 and 0.0001. For actuated valve packages in Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), the complete loop—sensor, logic solver, and final element (actuated valve)—must achieve the target SIL level. We supply SIL-capable actuated valve packages with FMEDA data sheets.

What is partial stroke testing (PST) on ESD valves?
Partial stroke testing moves the ESD valve approximately 10-20% from its normal position to verify that the valve, actuator, and solenoid are functional without fully closing the valve and interrupting the process. PST is performed online at regular intervals (monthly or quarterly) to demonstrate SIL compliance. We supply ESD packages with dedicated PST solenoid valves and position transmitters for automated partial stroke testing.
