What does API 607 fire-safe test involve?
API 607 7th Edition test procedure involves: (1) closing the valve with water as test media, (2) subjecting the valve to a fire at 760°C minimum for 30 minutes using a propane/air burner arrangement, (3) monitoring external leakage through packing/body joints and internal leakage past the seat during and after the fire. The valve must also operate (open/close) after the fire test. Leakage limits are defined in the standard.
Is a triple-offset butterfly valve inherently fire-safe?
Yes. Triple-offset butterfly valves (TOBVs) with laminated graphite or Stellite seal rings are inherently fire-safe because they use metal-to-metal seating with no soft seat that can be destroyed by fire. This makes TOBVs an excellent choice for hydrocarbon isolation without requiring separate fire-safe certification.
What is the role of anti-static device in fire-safe valves?
The anti-static device (typically a spring-loaded pin between the stem and ball) ensures electrical continuity between the ball, stem, and body. This prevents static charge buildup during fluid flow, which could generate a spark and ignite flammable media. Anti-static design is mandatory per API 608, ISO 17292, and most oil & gas valve specifications.
Do fire-safe valves need special maintenance?
Fire-safe valves should be regularly inspected for: packing integrity (graphite packing must be live-loaded), seat leakage (soft seats degrade with use), anti-static device function (continuity test), and emergency sealant injection port patency. We recommend including fire-safe valves in preventive maintenance programs with documented torque verification and leakage checks.
