What is a butterfly valve and how does it work?

A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve with a circular disc that rotates 90 degrees to open or close flow. When the disc is parallel to flow, the valve is fully open with minimal pressure drop. When perpendicular, it is closed. The disc is mounted on a shaft that passes through the valve body.

This provides bubble-tight sealing even at high pressures and temperatures. Used in oil & gas, petrochemical, and severe service applications.

Can butterfly valves be used for throttling?

Yes, butterfly valves can be used for throttling service. For precise control, use a high-performance triple offset valve with a properly sized actuator. Butterfly valves provide good rangeability and relatively low pressure drop compared to globe valves for the same size.
