What is the difference between a PSV and a PRV?
A PSV (pressure safety valve) is a safety device that opens to relieve overpressure and protect a vessel, boiler or pipeline. A PRV (pressure reducing valve) is a control valve that continuously reduces and holds a lower downstream pressure during normal operation. Supreme Valves India supplies both: API-style PSVs / safety relief valves and steam/air/water PRVs, DN15–DN150, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates.

PSV vs PRV — Which Valve Do You Need?
Clear difference between pressure safety valves and pressure reducing valves, plus what to send so we can quote the correct construction.
PSV vs PRV in one table
Short rule: if the valve is there to stop a vessel bursting, it is a PSV (or safety relief valve). If it is there to feed a lower pressure to the next equipment, it is a PRV.
Do you need both?
Often yes. A steam PRV station reduces boiler or header pressure to the process. A PSV on the downstream vessel or heat exchanger still protects against PRV failure, blocked outlet or fire case. Gas regulator stations use a PRV (or regulator) plus a slam-shut / relief combination for the same reason.
What Supreme Valves supplies
RFQ checklist (so we quote the right valve)
- Say clearly: PSV / safety relief or PRV / pressure reducing
- Fluid (steam / air / gas / liquid), inlet and outlet pressure, temperature
- For PSV: set pressure, overpressure, back pressure, required capacity
- For PRV: inlet max, outlet set point, flow min/normal/max
- Size, ends, material, IBR if steam in India, certificates needed
What to send with your enquiry
- PSV or PRV (state which)
- Fluid, pressures and temperature
- Capacity / flow
- Size, ends, material
- IBR / certificates / TPI if required

Frequently asked questions
Is a PSV the same as a safety relief valve?
In plant practice, PSV and safety relief valve are often used for the same overpressure protection device. API 520/526 language distinguishes safety, relief and safety-relief types by fluid; we quote to your datasheet.
Can a PRV replace a PSV?
No. A PRV is not a certified safety device for vessel protection. You still need a PSV sized for the relieving case.
What does PRV mean on a steam line?
Usually pressure reducing valve — it drops steam header pressure to the process set point.
Which one do I enquire for first?
If you have a set pressure and relieving capacity for vessel protection, ask for a PSV. If you have inlet/outlet pressures and a flow to control, ask for a PRV.
Do you supply both from India?
Yes. Supreme Valves India (Ahmedabad) supplies PSVs, safety relief valves and PRVs with material certificates and export packing.
Where can I download datasheets?
