What is a ROSOV valve?
A ROSOV (Remotely Operated Shut-Off Valve) is a fail-safe automated valve that isolates a tank, vessel or pipeline of hazardous material from a safe remote location in an emergency. It combines a fire-safe valve (usually triple offset butterfly or ball valve, tested to API 607), a spring-return actuator that closes on loss of air or power, fire protection for the actuator and cables, position feedback and partial stroke testing. Supreme Valves India supplies complete ROSOV assemblies, Class 150 to 600.

ROSOV Valve — Remotely Operated Shut-Off Valve
Fail-safe, fire-safe emergency isolation valves for tank farms, fuel terminals, refineries and chemical plants, supplied as complete tested assemblies.
What is a ROSOV?
ROSOV stands for Remotely Operated Shut-Off Valve. It is an automated valve that can be closed from a safe location, such as a control room or a push-button station outside the hazard area, to isolate a tank, vessel or pipeline holding a hazardous substance in an emergency. It is the main barrier against loss of containment when operators cannot safely reach a manual valve, for example during a fire, tank overfill or large leak.
The term is widely used in the UK and Europe after the Buncefield fuel depot explosion (2005); HSE guidance HSG244 sets out when ROSOVs are needed and how they should be designed. The same principles are now used in tank farms, terminals, refineries and chemical plants worldwide.
Design requirements for a ROSOV
ROSOV vs ESDV vs MOV
In practice the hardware is similar: a fire-safe quarter-turn valve with a spring-return pneumatic or electro-hydraulic actuator, solenoid valve, limit switches and fire protection. The difference is in how it is initiated and the integrity level required.
Valve types used as ROSOVs
- Triple offset butterfly valve (TOBV) — metal-seated, torque-seated, fire-safe; preferred for larger tank lines (6" and above).
- Floating or trunnion-mounted ball valve — fire-safe API 607, soft or metal seated; common on 2" to 12" lines.
- Actuated gate valve — used on some pipelines where full bore and pigging are required.
Supreme Valves supplies complete ROSOV assemblies: fire-safe triple offset butterfly or ball valve, spring-return scotch yoke or rack-and-pinion actuator, solenoid valve, limit switch box, partial stroke testing option and fireproofing, tested and documented as one unit, Class 150 to 600, in WCB, LCC and SS316.

Frequently asked questions
What does ROSOV stand for?
ROSOV stands for Remotely Operated Shut-Off Valve, an automated valve that can be closed from a safe location to isolate hazardous inventory in an emergency.
What is the difference between a ROSOV and an ESDV?
An ESDV is closed automatically by the emergency shutdown system; a ROSOV is designed to be closed remotely by an operator, although it can also be tied into automatic shutdown. The valve and actuator hardware are often similar.
Does a ROSOV have to be fire-safe?
Yes. The valve should be fire-safe tested (API 607 / ISO 10497) and the actuator, solenoid and cabling should be protected so the valve can still close during a fire.
What guidance covers ROSOVs?
UK HSE guidance HSG244 covers ROSOVs for emergency isolation of hazardous substances. Where the ROSOV is part of a safety instrumented function, IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 apply.
Which valve type is best for a ROSOV?
Triple offset butterfly valves are common on larger tank lines because they are metal seated and fire-safe; floating or trunnion ball valves are common on smaller lines.
Why is partial stroke testing used on ROSOVs?
Partial stroke testing moves the valve a small amount in service to prove it is not stuck, without shutting down the line, which improves the probability of the valve closing on demand.
