UL Listed vs FM Approved: what each mark means
A UL Listed valve has been tested by Underwriters Laboratories against a UL standard for fire service (for example UL 262 for gate valves, UL 1091 for butterfly valves, UL 312 for check valves) and the factory is under UL follow-up inspection. Each listing sits under a UL file number that can be looked up in the UL Product iQ directory.
An FM Approved valve has been tested by FM Approvals (FM Global group) against an FM approval standard (for example Class 1120/1130 for gate valves, Class 1112 for butterfly valves, Class 1210 for check valves) and appears in the FM Approval Guide. FM approval is usually required where the property is insured by FM Global or the specification calls for FM.
Many fire-water specifications ask for UL/FM, meaning the exact model and size must appear in both listings. LPCB (UK) and VdS (Germany) are equivalent third-party approvals used in Europe, the Gulf and some Asian projects.
How to verify an FM approval or UL listing before you order
- Ask the supplier for the model designation, size range and pressure rating exactly as listed, not a generic catalogue name.
- Check the model in the FM Approval Guide (approvalguide.com) and the UL Product iQ directory. The listing shows the manufacturing location, sizes and rated working pressure.
- Confirm the end connection is covered: a flanged listing does not cover a grooved valve of the same series, and vice versa.
- For butterfly valves on sprinkler control service, confirm the supervisory (tamper) switch is part of the listed assembly.
- Request copies of the listing / approval certificate pages and the valve datasheet with the offer, and check the UL / FM mark is cast or plated on the delivered valve.

What is the difference between UL listed and FM approved valves?
UL listing is issued by Underwriters Laboratories against UL standards such as UL 262 and UL 1091; FM approval is issued by FM Approvals against FM classes such as 1120 and 1112. Both involve type testing and factory audits. Many specifications require both (UL/FM) for the same model and size.
How do I check if a valve is FM approved?
Search the exact model in the FM Approval Guide (approvalguide.com). The entry lists the manufacturer, model, sizes, end connections and rated working pressure. For UL, search the UL Product iQ directory using the UL file number.
Do you supply UL / FM valves with certificates?
Yes. The offer states the listing reference for each model and size, and we supply the datasheet, listing certificate pages and hydrostatic test certificates with the material.
What sizes and pressure ratings are available?
Standard listed constructions cover 2" to 24" at PN16 (approximately 232 psi), with flanged BS EN 1092-2 or grooved ISO 6182 ends. Other ratings such as 250 psi and 300 psi are quoted on request depending on the listing.
Is a UL listed gate valve also FM approved?
Not automatically. The model and size must appear in both directories. Several resilient wedge OS&Y and NRS gate valves we supply carry both UL and FM approval; we confirm it per size on the quotation.
