Why install a moisture separator on steam boiler lines?
Moisture separators remove entrained condensate and water droplets from steam before it reaches turbines, PRVs, heat exchangers, or precision instruments. Place them upstream of sensitive equipment, drain continuously via steam traps, and isolate with WCB gate or globe valves for maintenance. See moisture separator products and related WCB gate / globe pages.
Moisture Separator for Steam Boiler Lines

Wet steam problems in boiler plants
Boilers and long steam distribution lines generate condensate through heat loss. Entrained droplets erode turbine blades, destroy PRV seats, water-hammer pipework, and reduce heat-transfer efficiency in exchangers. A moisture separator — sometimes called a steam separator — uses centrifugal, baffle, or coalescing internals to throw liquid to the wall and drain pot while dry steam continues downstream.
Supreme Valves supplies moisture separators for steam systems alongside the isolation and check valves that complete a proper steam set. This guide covers placement, drainage, materials, and RFQ practice without publishing prices.
Where to locate separators
Install separators immediately upstream of steam turbines, engine intakes, critical PRVs, and process equipment that cannot tolerate wet steam. On long headers, place separators near the point of use rather than only at the boiler — condensate reforms along the pipe. Provide isolation valves on both sides so the separator can be maintained without shutting the entire header when a bypass is available.
Pair with correctly sized steam traps on the separator drain. A separator without a working trap fills with water and fails. Strainers ahead of traps reduce blockage from scale.
Separator types and performance
Centrifugal separators spin the steam to fling droplets outward. Baffle or vane separators force direction changes that drop out liquid. Coalescing elements capture fine mist. Efficiency depends on velocity, droplet size, and pressure. Oversizing reduces velocity and separation efficiency; undersizing increases pressure drop and carryover risk.
State required steam dry-ness fraction or maximum allowable moisture if the process specification includes it. For general industrial steam, a well-drained centrifugal or baffle separator sized to the line velocity is typical.
Materials and pressure class
Carbon steel bodies (including WCB fabrications or cast designs depending on product) suit most plant steam. Stainless internals may be specified for wet corrosive condensate. Match flange class to the steam piping class — use the pressure class selector when aligning companion WCB valves.
Design temperature must cover superheat if present. Gaskets and drain valves must be steam-rated. For IBR boiler circuits in India, confirm whether the separator and its drain valves fall under IBR documentation using the IBR checklist and IBR buyer checklist article.
Valve set around a separator
Typical arrangement: upstream isolation (WCB gate), separator body, drain globe or trap set, downstream isolation, and often a check valve if reverse flow into the header is possible. A throttling globe may appear on warm-up bypasses around the separator train.
During commissioning, warm lines slowly and verify trap discharge. Waterlogged separators are a leading cause of turbine trips after outages.

Commissioning and maintenance checklist
Before admitting steam, verify that drain valves are open to the trap set, isolation valves stroke freely, and flange bolts are torqued to the piping specification. Blow out construction debris through temporary strainers if the line was welded nearby. During first heat-up, open isolation valves gradually and listen for hammer — sudden full opening into a cold, flooded separator is a common failure mode.
On maintenance outages, isolate, depressurize, and drain the separator completely before opening manways or end covers. Inspect baffles or vanes for erosion and replace gaskets with steam-rated materials. Confirm trap orifice condition; a failed-open trap wastes steam, while a failed-closed trap floods the separator and sends slugs downstream. Keep a spare trap and gasket kit at site for critical turbine supply trains.
Document as-built tag numbers against the GA drawing and file MTCs with the boiler or steam system dossier. When expanding the plant, re-evaluate separator capacity if steam demand rises — velocity changes affect separation efficiency. For class alignment of new companion valves, revisit the pressure class selector and the WCB gate steam isolation guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is a steam trap the same as a moisture separator?
No. Separators remove bulk entrained moisture from flowing steam; traps discharge condensate from low points and separator drains.
Where should the separator drain connect?
To a steam trap set that discharges to the condensate return, with isolation for maintenance.
Can I use only a trap without a separator?
Traps handle condensate at drains; they do not remove high-velocity entrained droplets as effectively as a dedicated separator upstream of turbines or PRVs.
What valves accompany a separator?
WCB gate or ball isolation, drain valves, and often check valves — sized to the same steam class.
