What an NRV must achieve

A non-return valve (NRV) or check valve opens with forward flow and closes against reverse flow to protect pumps, compressors, and boilers from backflow. Swing check valves use a hinged disc that swings open with flow and seats under reverse flow or gravity. They are widely used on pump discharge, cooling water, and steam lines where pressure drop must remain low and the fluid is relatively clean.

ASTM A216 WCB swing checks serve non-corrosive water, oil, and steam services. This guide helps plant and EPC buyers decide when a swing check is appropriate versus dual-plate wafer or lift checks, and what to put on the RFQ when sourcing from India.

Swing vs dual-plate vs lift check

Swing checks offer full-bore-like flow with low head loss and are robust on large diameter lines. They can slam shut on sudden reverse flow, causing water hammer — especially on long liquid pipelines. Dual-plate wafer checks are shorter, lighter, and spring-assisted for faster, non-slam closing, but have different face-to-face and may not suit every abrasive or high-temperature steam duty without review.

Lift checks (piston or ball) suit high-pressure small-bore service and some steam trap lines but introduce higher pressure drop. Match the check type to fluid, slam risk, space, and piping class. Orientation and piping layout

Standard swing checks are designed for horizontal flow with the hinge pin horizontal. Vertical up-flow may be acceptable only if the manufacturer confirms disc design; vertical down-flow is usually prohibited because the disc may hang open. Always install with the flow arrow matching process direction.

Provide straight pipe lengths upstream and downstream where practical so the disc opens fully and does not chatter. Avoid installing immediately after a severe elbow that creates asymmetric velocity on the disc.

Steam and condensate service notes

On steam, condensate pooling in the body can cause hammer when steam is admitted. Slope piping for drainage and use traps. Pair steam NRVs with proper isolation gates and consider a moisture separator upstream of turbines. Class selection follows ASME B16.34 — use the selector tool for a conservative class.

Metal seats are standard on WCB steam checks. Soft seats may be used on clean liquid utility lines for tighter shutoff but are limited by temperature.

Sizing and slam mitigation

Undersized checks chatter; oversized checks may not open fully at low flow, causing wear. Size from forward flow rate and allowable pressure drop. Where pump trip reverse flow is severe, specify spring-assisted swing or dual-plate non-slam designs and review water-hammer analysis with the piping engineer.

For pump discharge packages, list maximum reverse differential pressure and closing speed requirements on the RFQ.
